Visitors to the area of California known as the Central Coast (halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco and near the city of San Luis Obispo) may choose to bring along their clubs. The region offers nine public golf courses close to the ocean that maintain a mild summer climate. Two newly designed and constructed courses offer challenging rounds while other courses in the area provide a place for all levels of golfers to test their skills. Reasonably priced golf defines all the choices and tee times are generally available within a short booking schedule. Golf Courses in Nipomo and Arroyo GrandeThe soft rolling hills of Nipomo are laced with eucalyptus trees, strawberry fields and offer views of the nearby sand dunes. This enticing environment created an ideal location for the new Trilogy development of homes and golf courses. Some of the construction continues around the fairways but the two public courses in the area are open for play. Monarch Dunes Golf Club: Named after the butterfly that migrates to the coast each fall, this course offers eighteen holes of challenging golf. The front nine takes golfers across sloping tree lined fairways where traps, water hazards and ravines come into play. On the back nine, split fairways, rough grass covered knolls and long fairways create a links style format. For anyone wanting a putting challenge, this is the course to play. Bring your short game here and try to avoid the moguls, water and be careful on the lightening quick greens. Playing this course is a reasonably priced option and will offer a few hours of interesting golf for any player. Book this course through Monarch Dunes. Blacklake Golf Resort: One of the older courses in the area, Blacklake offers variety with three 9-hole options. Playing the Oaks, Canyons or Lakes course provides all levels of golfers a variety of options. Shady oak trees and hillside views surround the course. Cypress Ridge Golf Club: Another newer option built within a large residential development, this public golf course is a well-maintained resort style course. Traps and tree lined ravines create a danger zone for many players but the pristine fairways and smooth greens create a delightful round of golf. Golf Courses in Pismo BeachThe resort town of Pismo Beach is a fun place to spend a summer day relaxing on the sand, walking the pier or browsing the shops on Main Street. For golfers, another option provides a place to play a quick, inexpensive round. Riviera Golf Course: This 9-hole executive course is a good bargain and great place to have a practice round before taking on the more difficult courses. Golf Courses in Avila BeachOne of the prettiest towns on the Central Coast, Avila Beach enjoys many mild sunny days. The fog seems to lift earlier here and aside from a protected harbor for swimming, outdoor cafes and small beachfront hotels, there’s a first class golf course to play. Avila Beach Golf Resort: Many migratory birds including herons and egrets spend time on the wide creeks that pass through this course. Mule deer, Canadian geese and wild turkeys walk the course along with local golfers. Renting a golf cart may be a better option for many players who book a round at this challenging course. Rated as one of the most difficult in the county, some water comes into play, narrow fairways and uphill greens. The scenery and wildlife make this one of the most beautiful courses in the area. Golf Courses in Morro Bay and Los OsosMorro Bay Golf Course: Locals refer to the Morro Bay golf course as the “poor man’s Pebble Beach.” Although prices at this county course have recently increased slightly, it is one of the best golf bargains on the Central Coast. Many of the holes offer ocean views and long, sloping fairways provide a challenge but will not overly intimidate the average golfer. Sea Pines Golf Resort: This nine-hole executive course will have golfers using most of the clubs in their bag. Golf Courses in San Luis ObispoDairy Creek Golf Course: Located off Hwy. 1 about twenty minutes from downtown San Luis Obispo, this course resides on land once used for farming. The open fairways slope and roll and those with a less than straight hit may find their ball in a ravine.
