If you are not familiar with Par 3 courses, here is a simple explanation. Regulation/standard golf courses have 18 holes for play. Of those 18 holes, a few are par 3, but most are either par 4 or par 5. A par 3 course is made up of par 3’s only. Therefore it is a much shorter course.
Why would someone play on a Par 3 course as opposed to a regulation course?
Again it is a much shorter course. This means less walking, and the golfer will take fewer strokes. This makes Par 3 courses great for beginners, seniors and anyone who might feel they are not yet physically able to play 18 holes on a regulation course.
The course also helps to build accuracy, making it a great training ground for beginners. Because there is a much shorter distance to the hole, the golfer needs to focus more on his/her aim then on distance. Most beginners want to immediately try and hit the ball as hard as they can. This is especially true with men. Hitting the ball as hard as you can leads to bad habits. Playing on a Par 3 course puts the emphasis on accuracy. Any golfer will tell you that it is much easier to improve distance then it is to improve accuracy, especially after you have already developed bad habits such as slicing or hooking.
They are great for those short on time. Depending upon skill and traffic on the course, the average player spends about four hours playing 18 holes of golf on a regulation course, and about two hours playing nine holes. On a Par 3 course, one can play 18 holes in about 2 ½ hours, and 9 holes in a little over an hour.
They are great courses for women to play. Many women have trouble with getting distance on their ball, especially in the beginning. This can become very discouraging on a regulation course, especially on those par 5 holes. If you aren’t getting much distance on your ball, you will also have to take many swings on a par 5 hole which can be exhausting. Thus, many women prefer Par 3 courses because distance is no longer an issue.
Par 3 courses are great places to practice. One can get a little bored with training at the driving range. Every once in a while it might be a good idea to play 9 holes at a Par 3 course. You can be done in almost the time you would spend on the driving range.
