Is golf good for you? Playing any sport as a hobby should be encouraged, not only is it a benefit for physical health, but playing golf also gives people an interest.

Most people think golf is an old man’s sport, and if they decide to play, generally gravitate to the golf course after spending time playing team sports in their youth. Only after having taken up the game, do they realise the benefits of playing golf as a hobby.

A Healthy Hobby

  • During a round of golf a person walks about five miles. It takes four hours to complete eighteen holes and during that time a golfer burns roughly 352 calories an hour. A round of golf burns approximately 1404 calories. However many people just play nine holes or you could use a buggy.

  • The golf swing involves a turning of the body back and forth, which is great exercise for the back and tummy muscles.

  • Playing any sport in the fresh air is good for a person but a low impact, less physically demanding sport like golf can be played through out life.

  • While golf clubs are friendly places, and there is always someone looking for a game, unlike many other sports golf can be played on your own.

  • There is more than one way to hit a golf ball and no matter what the injuries a person might have, it is still possible to play golf.

The Mental Benefits

  • Golf clubs are great places to meet new people and mix with friends. It’s a game that can be played by the whole family.

  • Being a stationary ball sport it can be easy to learn the basics. But to become good at golf requires some effort to understand the swing, and mental discipline to ingrain the lessons learned into your game.

  • Even the simple arithmetic of counting up your score and calculating handicaps can keep the mind stimulated.

  • Most golf clubs, although much more relaxed than they used to be, have a casual dress code. Turning up relatively smart each time means a slight effort is made with regards to appearance. Taking trouble about the way you look sometimes requires effort. That’s a good thing.

  • More than anything else golf teaches someone to keep going for the full round. Whatever we do in life, if we can learn to keep going, and keep trying, it can only be good for our mental health. Overall it will add to our happiness.

How to Try Golf

Nearly every town has a local pay and play club open to the general public. Everything you need to start playing golf will be there for you to buy or hire. Golf is now a very inexpensive game and even group lessons with a pro are cheap.
