Without control a golfer can get lured into spending a great deal of money on clubs and equipment, but by following these tips golf can be enjoyed and played without it becoming too costly. Don't go into debt buying the latest clubs when second hand clubs can be just as good.

How to Save Money Buying Clubs

Each year most golf companies bring out new equipment luring golfers to invest in the latest golf club technology. And it is true that year on year golf equipment does improve – but how much is questionable. One of the most highly regarded sets of irons of all time is the Ping Eye 2 that was in production over a decade ago. A full set of these clubs can be picked up on the Internet second hand for less than eighty dollars. Buying second hand golf equipment will not hinder your golf and it's a great way to save money.

  • If you decide to buy second hand clubs or irons the most important part thing to look out for is the quality of the shaft. Club heads don’t really wear out and grips can be changed if necessary. Just make sure the golf shafts are in reasonable condition.

Buying Golf Gloves

Ben Hogan, one of the greatest golfers of all time, never wore a golf glove. And as a perfectionist, if it was warranted, Hogan would have worn one. Lucas Glover the American Pro who recently won the 2009 US Open also elects not to wear a glove. If you normally wear a glove and want to save some money try not wearing one during a practice session - most golfers find it doesn’t make much difference.

  • If you prefer to wear a glove, buy an all weather glove which lasts much longer than a leather glove. Juniors do not need to wear a glove even if they insist they need the same glove as a top pro.

Save Money on Green Fees and Improve Your Swing

In times of recession saving money is important, and weekly greenfees can become difficult to justify. Try a different approach to your golf.

  • Get together with three other friends and suggest having a course of group lessons from the local pro at roughly the same time you would normally play.
  • The cost of six hours of tuition in a group would be much less than the cost of six green fees.
  • Not only at the end of six weeks would your golf have improved, but you would also have saved some money.
  • After each lesson get together with your friends to practice what you learned and create some fun competitions on the range to enhance the enjoyment.
  • In some countries like Japan, very few golfers get to play on the golf course as space is limited, yet golf is still greatly enjoyed at the range. Use imagination to make practice fun and save up the money to buy equipment when the economic climate recovers.
