Not everyone can become a pro golfer, but even the amateurs have ideas every so often. Got a great golf idea? Reality TV might make that invention the next big thing.
Sure, lots of golfers come up with great golf ideas. Inventions to make the game easier, tools for practice, even implements to improve clubs have been featured in shops across the world. After all, the sport itself began with an invention, and the history of golf is peppered with unique ideas that shaped the activity into what it is today. This spring, it’s the inventors - not the pros - who will rule the links on The Golf Channel. Drive Toward RealityThrough the magic of reality TV, almost anyone can become a star. Bad singers, couples-of-the-moment, even those who are simply looking for a better job - television has become the perfect medium for ordinary people who want to achieve a little extra fame and fortune. Even those who have great golf ideas can drive toward success with reality TV, and who knows what invention might be the next big thing in the sport? Golf InventionsThe Golf Channel, which is something of a TV mecca for all those who love the game, is current casting its second season of Fore Inventors Only. This golf-based, invention-driven reality show holds auditions to discover the next great golf idea. Okay, so actually the show starts out with several great golf ideas and then narrows the field to one winner. The journey itself is where home viewers get involved, and where all the fun happens. With auditions currently underway (and it’s not too late to get in the door), the cable channel hopes to start shooting new shows in the spring. Golfing GadgetsNo invention is off limits on The Golf Channel’s Fore Inventors Only. Last season (the first for the series) featured golfing gadgets and inventions of all kinds - everything from traveling bag holders to shaft decorations to gyroscopic clubs. Every invention is treated seriously, tested by a panel of those experienced in the industry and then judged by merit and purpose. After this first round of auditions, a small field of competitors is picked out. And then? Let the invention games begin. Field testing (in which pro golfers actually test each invention), live demonstrations and even TV commercials follow, as each week more inventors are sent packing. Simply to be featured on the channel is helpful to most golf inventors, who get all sorts of free promotion for themselves and their great golf idea. But once the smoke clears and only two competitors remain, the winner is finally unveiled amidst much celebration. The award? Acclaim for the golf invention…and, of course, air time on The Golf Channel itself. For those with a great golf idea, there are few prizes which could possibly be sweeter.
