Most golfers who suffer from a bad back have poor golf technique which has caused the problem. Cure back pain by turning round the spine rather than rock back and forth.
There is nothing more depressing for a golfer than having to suffer pain in the lower back when they attempt to swing. Every shot becomes a chore and as the round progresses it becomes mentally exhausting dealing with the discomfort. But most back problems caused by a bad swing can be helped with the correct posture at address and with a few adjustments to the swing. Golfers Bad BackNormally golfers with poor technique suffer from lower back pain on the right side. This is because they have an upper body action that doesn’t turn round the spine. Instead the body tilts, or rocks back and forward. This type of swing is often called a reverse pivot. Due to an incorrect address position, where the hips and spine are set incorrectly, instead of being able to turn the shoulders on the back swing the golfer tilts the shoulders. Rather than the left shoulder maintaining its height as it turns, it drops down. Because the back swing is relatively slow, this movement is pain free, but as the golfer accelerates on the down swing, and the left shoulder jumps up, the vertebrae in the lower right hand side of the back are violently compressed. This is where the discomfort comes from. Learn to Stand Correctly for a Good TurnWhen you take up your grip, the right hand slips below the left and the right shoulder moves down slightly. This moves the left shoulder up and the spine tilts slightly away from the target. As the spine moves the hips should be pulled forward. In a poor stance, which sets up a reverse pivot, the hips don’t move. To help stop the reverse pivot the golfer must make sure the hips compliment the spinal angle and have moved forward as the spine moves back Seek AdviceAny golfer who suffers from a bad back should go to see a doctor or back specialist. But if they want to carry on playing they must also ask the advice of golf pro. All pros have seen the damage poor posture can have on the back and they will be able to explain and show you the correct stance. However, most golfers with bad backs know this already and may well have had lessons. Yet they still stand to the ball poorly. This is where you have to trust the professional. It may well be that the adjustment to the stance will make you hit the ball badly for a while. But if you persevere not only will your back feel less pain but your golf will also improve. You will gain power from the correct turn and incredibly you will hit the ball straighter as well. Seek the advice of the professionals and then do as they say. It really will pay dividends.
