The heart of the West Country is known by many to be Dartmoor, which lies about three hours drive from London. The costal region surrounding Dartmoor is one of the most spectacular in Britain. The coast to the South of Dartmoor has some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country for walking or golf.
South West Coast Path
Insiders have always known that the South West Coast Path was special, but now it is officially the ‘best of the best’. Readers of Country Walking, Britain’s biggest- selling walking magazine, have voted it Britain’s Greatest Walk.
Country Walking journalist Jenny Walters described it as ‘630 miles of unparalleled gorgeousness’. The Path traces the region’s coastline from Minehead, all the way to the shores of Poole Harbour. Two World Heritage Sites, a National Park, five areas of outstanding natural beauty and a World Biosphere Reserve provide some of the highlights along the way.
Golf in the West Country
There are some great golf courses in the West Country; far too many to play in one trip though. If you head for Dartmoor, and stay in the area, there are many inland and coastal courses open to the public. All information regarding the courses is readily available on the Internet. Before you decide which ones to play, check out the weather, some of the cliff top courses are pretty tricky in the wind!
Churston Ferres Golf Club
On the drive from London you could stop off at Churston Ferres Golf Club, it is known as one of Devon’s best-kept secrets.
The par 70 parkland course meanders along the cliffs overlooking Torbay.
The views are breathtaking, and if you are not careful they will take your mind off why you visited the course in the first place. 6,219 Yards Par 70. Post Code – TQ5 OLA
Thurlestone Golf Club
When you reach Dartmoor this will be one of the courses to try. Situated to the south of Dartmoor, right on the coast, the course is a mix of links and cliff-top terrain.
The course measures 6230 yards from the back tees, whilst the ladies are faced with 5538 yards.
Spectacular views may be enjoyed from every hole on the course, which provides a challenge to all levels of golfer. Postcode – TQ7 3NZ
