Michigan State University offers challenging, fun and affordable golfing at Forest Akers Golf Course East.

Forest Akers Golf Course is located just a couple of miles from the main campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. The course consists of two 18-hole courses (East and West), a professional golf shop on each course and a practice facility (on the East Course) with a driving range, practice bunkers and putting green. The practice facility known as the MSU Golf Center is also the training site for MSU's men and women's golf teams.

The East Course is a 6,900+ yard 72 par course awarded a 3.5 star rating by Golf Digest. Although it has taken a back seat to the West Course which was recently redesigned, it is still a challenging, fun and affordable course to play. In addition to the 3.5 star rating from Golf Digest, the course is also recognized by/as:

  • The 2006 Zagat Survey as a Top Ten Value in the United States.
  • One of America's Top Golf Courses by the Zagat Survey in 2003.
  • Best Value Course in 2003 by Great Lakes Magazine.

Golfers at beginning and intermediate skill levels will enjoy playing the East Course; but more advanced players may find the West Course more suitable to their skill level. Some of the reasons for this are:

  • The fairways on the East Course are quite wide and overall pretty level (a 114 slope rating from the farthest tee compared to 139 slope rating on the West course).
  • Although the course has several mature trees, overall, the hazards are minimal; i.e. there is only one real water hazard and there are several bunkers, they are somewhat shallow and easy to get out of.
  • There are two par 5 holes on the front 9, and two on the back 9. But the longest tee is just 554 yards to the green, which for some advanced players may not be very challenging.

Forest Akers Golf Course East is a very well maintained and manicured course with extremely green grass/fairways. The course offers some of the amenities of a more exclusive golf club including complimentary water, starter attendants, four tee boxes and a snack bar; but lack in other amentities such as a beverage cart, cart return or bag drop attendees. Considering the overall quality of the course however, the green fees are extremely reasonable. Guests can play 18-holes during the week for $41, and $43 on weekends (fees include a cart). For additional discounts, check the website for special offers and coupons.
