Many women and men who have never played golf enter the business world and find golf is a popular social event. Learning to play is part of advancing a career.

Career enhancing situations can occur at any time. Often, business is conducted on the golf course, either through interaction with higher-ups or opportunities with clients.

Knowing simple golf etiquette can help make a positive impact. Playing well is less important that presenting a proper image and understanding of the game.

Golf Clubs for the Beginner

Golf is an expensive sport, and paying extra for the highest performing equipment is of little help for the beginner.

Starting with the clubs, consider buying a set of reasonably priced clubs, with three woods (which are rarely made of wood these days, but are still referred to as such), a full set of irons 3-9, a pitching wedge and a putter. These are more than any beginner will need, but will allow for growth and experience.

Beginners may consider renting clubs until they find they really enjoy the game, but the cost of rentals will quickly surpass a decent set of mid-priced clubs. It is best to get a recommendation from a salesperson or a golf club pro; otherwise select a familiar brand.

Golf Balls for the New Golfer

Those starting out should buy a few dozen mid-range golf balls. Avoid X-outs, which don’t cost much, but will brand you as a beginner, (and a cheap one). X-outs are rejects that will not perform as well as a first quality golf ball.

Buying the most expensive golf balls probably isn’t necessary. Chances are that a beginner will lose many balls in the water hazards or the woods. Losing a $4 golf ball on the first shot will quickly cause a new golfer to lose heart.

Other Golf Equipment for the Beginner

A package of tees will be needed. It’s bad form to borrow tees from playing partners, and they are the least expensive item needed. A tool to repair the green will add a bit of prestige.

Golf gloves are helpful and show an appreciation for the game. Golfers only wear one glove, on the opposite hand from the way they swing. That is, right handed golfers wear a left-hand glove; lefties wear one on the right hand.

Consider a pair of golf shoes, which provide stability. Falling down while swinging is very amateurish. Shoes won’t prevent it, but may help.

Clothing for the New Golfer

Blue Jeans are prohibited at better country clubs. Khakis or Chinos are acceptable, with a collared shirt. Shorts can be worn on hot days at most clubs, following the same rules as pants.

Golf can be a difficult sport for the beginner, and most experienced golfers understand. If the newbie shows that he or she is interested enough to get the proper equipment, veterans will be more likely to take them under their wing.
