Cleveland CG14 WedgesCleveland Remains the Standard in the Golf Wedge CategoryFor years, the name Cleveland has been synonymous with great wedges. They have outdone themselves with the new CG14 wedges.
Suite101.com Golf tested the 56 and 60 degree chrome CG14 wedges. We found them to be as forgiving and playable as any wedge on the market. Cleveland has made square grooves hip again with their new Zip Grooves. Each groove is milled to maximum conforming dimensions using a proprietary mill bit that makes them the most consistent and precise technology to date. The grooves maintain their shape using a proprietary coating applied to the clubface. What does this mean to the golfer? Keep reading. The grooves on the clubface do two things: They grip the ball to impart backspin; and they channel dirt, grass, and debris so the golfer can make cleaner contact. Think of them as tire tread for the golf club. Traditional grooves are rounded, meaning they get narrower toward the back of the clubhead. That means less volume to catch all that debris. Cleveland’s Zip Grooves are square – they maintain the same width from the top of the clubface all the way to the bottom of the grooves. That means it will make cleaner contact in the fairway, resulting in more bite on the green. It also means more contact with the ball out of the rough, making it a sure bet out of the tall stuff. And of course, the CG14 chrome wedges are real weapons out of the sand. Golfers can be aggressive and still control distance from any type of sand – coarse, loose, or packed. The CG14 also incorporates a slight cavity back, punctuated by a gel insert, placed directly behind the hitting area. The insert is vibration-tuned to reduce unwanted jarring on mishits, but still produces enough feedback for the most discerning golfer. The CG14 can be used for a variety of shots. Use the 56-degree wedge for shots 100 yards and in. The Zip Grooves will help golfers stick it close and spin it back. They are easy to hit out of the rough, gliding through the grass, while still leaving the ball spinning like a top on the green. Around the green, they are perfect for the one-hop-and-stop, crowd-pleasing chips. Use the 56-degree wedge from loose sand around the green for reliable, accurate bunker shots. The 60-degree wedge is great for hitting from those in-between distances, Mickelsonesque flop shots, and easily executed bunker shots from firmer, coarser sand. The brilliant chrome finish and classic Cleveland clubhead design look great at address, helping to instill a sense of confidence in the golfer. It has a classic wedge shape, and a deep, forgiving face. The sole comes in standard and low bounce. Sources: Cleveland Golf, Golf Magazine
